It depends how how much you matured your first 39 years.
No maturity, and you didn't learn anything from your first 39 years, then life have not started for you yet.
You learned from your lessons, paid the consequence, understood what you did wrong, changed your ways, then I would say,
HOLD ON, GET READY, LIFE HAS JUST BEGUN!
Before that, you are in the school of life, going through the motions. At the age of 40, you will then just start finding out who you really are.
Proceed with caution: sometimes you find out, you are not quite so happy with who you have become. But remember that you are special and we all make mistakes, but we can change our life around.
I know that this is a little more than you asked for, but when you start hitting over 40, your outlook at life takes on a whole new meaning. So, when you start talking about it, you seem to not be able to stop. Much success to you, when you turn 40
To make your first 39 years really count to your benefit, don't waste your time, talent, and money, and good sense. Learn all you can, love, respect yourself and others, get a true foundation in your faith, and don't worry, be happy!

Life begins whenever you get up and decide to live it at 16 or 60. But the idea of "life beginning at 40," is valid to this extent. By 40, most of us have done a little living, a little learning and a little earning. We are (hopefully) no longer the "suckers" of our media-driven society the way say the 16-25 prime demographic group is - we can live without an MTV-IPOD-minidrive-car. Also we have (again hopefully) some clue as to how the world, love, the market and our computer work, so we are not constantly moving from "crisis" to crisis. Finally we have (if we have been lucky) a little money or discretionary income. If we married and had a family - the kids are at least no longer babies. So life is easier, more fun, less influenced by exterior-validation (dating, promotion, etc.) and more by interior-validation (what are the things you/I really enjoy in life and **** the world if they don't like it.) The problem lies (as I said at the beginning) in associating the state of "life" with an arbitrary age. Some people might get there sooner, others later. More and more we can see articles on "60 the new 40" as that ubiquitous demographic group, "the baby boomers" moves into their 60s. So in the end, who knows when life begins? In any case, here is a fun article about the "passages" in our lives (including 40) :

and happy 40th - whenever.

Geez, when I was younger I never wanted to be alive at the age of 40, it would be nice if that were true though, it gives me hope too.

No. That would imply that it all sucked before then, and I've had a pretty good ride the whole way. I'm 40 and still having fun. It usually hurts more the next day though.
