The new stitches usually dissolve on their own within 7-10 days...you really want them in as long as they last so that the surgery site has time to heal. The dentist should have given you instructions before he/she sent you home. You should also avoid chewing on that side, drinking through a straw, carbonated beverages, etc. Many dentist encourage rinsing with warm salt water several times a day to prevent infection.

Normally, stitches should stay in for 5-7 days before dentist takes them off since they are non-absorbable stitches. I know it will be very annoying because the food you eat is usually trapped under the stitches. Try not to eat sticky food and make sure than you rinse your mouth thoroughly after meal cuz there's usually plaque accumulated in that area.

It most likely will be that long. If the stitches are really tugging and bothering you, they may be ready to come out sooner. Go in and see your dentist, who may bring 'em out sooner if you're healing nicely.

In the meantime, hang in there. There's really nothing I can suggest for you. Those things suck so bad.

I am not for sure about the time. I had surgery and was in so much pain and my face swelled. I would have been just happy to have felt good. If you are in no pain, then please don't complain. If you are in pain, I am sorry because I know how you feel since I went through that too. I hope you feel better soon.

Spread a little oral gel over them to numb the area. You will feel a bit better.

I cut my own out after a few days. The doc had a real puzzled look in his face when he saw me again.
