To answer your question, the tail can be docked, but why and how is your dog injuring it's tail? If the dog is slapping his tail on tables, walls, etc and keeping it a bloody mess on the tip, it would be best to have the tail docked to a manageable length. If you choose to have the procedure performed, have a vet do it. It will require anesthetic, surgery, sutures and after care.

Please do not band your dogs tail....imagine placing a tight band to restrict blood flow to the tail, and in essence, allow the tail tissue to die and the tail fall off. That "procedure" would be very painful, to say the least. Banding would also leave a hideous, scarred stump!

** HOW is your dog's tail "getting hurt"?

If people are stepping on it, then I would say, "WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING!" in a loud, clear voice until they wake up. That might solve the problem right there and your poor dog won't have to have his tail cut off.

Unless there is a valid MEDICAL reason why this painful and traumatic amputation should be done, then I would say, NO WAY should you even consider having the dog's tail cut.

A dog needs his tail for balance and "expression".

If your arm were too long, would you want that cut off??

NO. Our idiot next door neighbor had a mutt tail docked when it was 8 months old. Horrible for the dog. Painful and healing takes much longer than a 2-3 day old puppy. I agree w/ previous answer- it's an amputation at this point. Please for your dogs sake don't. You may also have trouble finding a vet who will do it. That should tip you off there. What is too long? Was there a mistake during gestation that happened? Believe me, it's a perfect length for the dog. It may not be convienient for you, but try to overlook it.

Bless it's heart. It is possible. My precious border collie I had (he passed away at age 13 in 2000), he was involved in an accident with a school bus. He got away from me by darting out the front door just as the bus passed us. When the bus stopped to let some kids out, he just wanted to greet them but the driver didn't see him, shut the door and somehow his tail got caught in the door. The driver proceeded to drive down the street, so it tore up my pup's tail something horrid. We immediately rushed him to the vet where he was prepped for surgery and his tail was removed leaving approximately 5 inches. He stayed overnight and was given pain meds. He didn't act as if bothered him too much at all and within just a few days it healed nicely! If your dog keeps hurting his tail, I might consult my vet! Good luck to you and God Bless.

It could but it would be painful for the dog. There are two ways to dock your dog's tail.....

1.Have a veterianrian cut the tail off with surgical scissors. DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF....could really cause some serious harm to the dog if you made a simple mistake by accident........I have had dogs that thier breed standard required to have a dock tail( though mine were done so at birth by a vet or breeder)

2. Another way that takes like three days and something you can do yourself and not that painfull( I think) is tail banding. Here is a website that will help you with tail banding. www.skylocke.com/tailbanding

I personally think a vet should do it, though if you choose the tail banding you could do it yourself......takes like three days for the tail to fall off....did you know that Egyptians kept their dog tails docked because they thought that they couldn't get rabies if they didn'thave tails?

No, the dog's tail cannot be removed. Yes, it can be shortened. This practice is called docking and is performed primarily to prevent the exact problem you are having.

As the dog is older, the procedure would no longer be minor and nearly painless - it would be considered a surgery, and an amputation to be exact. Please consult a reputable veteranarian about this. While there is a chance that shortening the tail might be your best option, I am certain that a vet will be able to offer you other solutions (all of which will probably be less costly!).

No, it can only be done when the dog is just born or a few hours old. If you cut off the tail now your dog will be troubled in walking and running. The tail helps them balance and feel.

It can be very traumatic for an adult dog to have its tail removed and can even cause spinal damage. Leave the poor doggy's tail alone.
