I am a Muslim, Muslim or no Muslim debt is debt. Remind her politely, she should return it. Maybe there is some reason why she has not done it so far, all the best.
Congratualtions on embrasing the new religion, may Allah make this an easy change for you, amin
feel free to email me with any questions, about this or any other topic in the religion

Zakat is charity given to deserving persons. It is 2 1/2% of your savings. This does not count as Zakat. You can forgive the debt if you want to.

Yeah, actually, he's right. It's against are religion or very seriously looked down upon to not take that as Zakat. If anything, it's an easy Zakat, and if you make her pay you then it could be counted is rhiba.

I see no reason you should forgive the debt. Does she get a free ride just because you converted?

Jim,
does your new found religion says you MUST forgive the debt ?
I do not know about Islam's teachings ...but what I know is that it is not wrong to ask for a $$$$ debt to be returned.

lahamduallh as salaamu alaikm ,first we are to honor a loan and pay it back, was it established that it was a loan, second if we recieve many blessing for zakat, which is charity and we do not expect to get that back.and you know we can not be upset with a brother or sister formore than 3 days,so you must make peace with this situaation and allow Allah to give you blessinge in any event salaam

no definitely not!! but if she's a poor person and you feel comfortable doing so then consider it Zakah!!
but if she's not a poor person and you know she has the ability to pay back then NO it's a debt and she MUST pay back, and if she doesn't pay she'll have to pay on the day of judgment!!
a debt stays with you until judgment day!!
if she is unable to pay back because they doesnt work and have no one to take care of her then you can forgive and Allah will reward you!!
peace!!

No,
money owed
is money due.
No good person,
would take advantage
of religion to forsake
responsibility.
Even though it is
done all the time......
Collect what is due you!

If it would hurt her to pay off the debt then yes. You have truly captured the essence of your religion.
