I am not familiar with the Fire Dept rank structure. I am wondering: if you've been on the fire dept for...let's say......16 years shouldn't you at least be a Lt or Capt or at a minimum, a Driver or sernior driver?

I know someone with this length of time in at the Fire Dept and he's achieved the rank of Fire Fighter. He recently admitted that he'd had some personal issues where ex wife or former lover/girlfriend called the Dept and made some false allegations against him. He refused to divulge if he recvd any disciplinary action as a result. I can't help but wonder (now that I've been exposed to some of his BS) now if he hasn't risen in rank due to his bad attitude/behaviors versus discrimmination.

Does the Dept have policies that can cause you to not be promoted when you have personal issues?

I can only tell you about the local fire companies in my area, and the one I serve with We have Captains, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, and Chief. The Chief, and Deputy Chief are elected, the others are appointed by the Chiefs. It is possible that due to allegations he never held an officer position, but if he was a qualified firefighter and a responsible person would his peers believe these allegations? I work with guys who have served for 50 years and never held a fire ground officers position. You always need more Indians than chiefs. Hah, hah!! I'm proud to be firefighter, and some people would rather fight the fire than command it.

Like any other job, you have to "earn" promotions. There is nothing wrong with serving 16 years with the title of firefighter. Sometimes, individuals just want to do thier job and aren't interested in addtional responsibilites.

Typically fire depts. have positions like Lt., Capt., Asst. Chief, and Chief. There are some other specialized positions, like inspectors and whatnot, but that's about it for smaller departments. Larger depts. will have station chiefs and batallion commanders, but again, like another answerer offered, it depends on the department.
