I am also willing to try shareware. If neither, I would be willing to buy software, if it is not too costly. Most software that I have found, will only allow you to copy some files. Also, on my computer, there is a Dell function to allow me to make a backup copy of my Windows XP Home OS. It copies to CD's. Every time I try to make a backup copy, it stops part of the way through. Does anyone know what I should do?

There are a number of ways to backup your hard drive. You want to backup your files to an external hard drive. That being the case, I recommend two options.

1. Option 1: Windows XP Home Edition comes with a backup program but it is not installed by default. The backup program can backup everything or only the files you specify. Please read the following article on how to install the program. (http://www.theeldergeek.com/backup_for_xp_home_edition.htm)

After installing the program, read the following article on how to use it. (http://www.theeldergeek.com/backup_using_wizard.htm).

2. Option 2, you use a third party backup program called "SyncBack." The program is free with no adware or spyware. You can download the program at: (http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html#freeware). The program has a lot more features than Windows XP backup program. It can save files to CD's, external hard drives, online storage, ..etc. The basic functions are easy to learn but for the advance features you will need to read the help files. I use Syncback for a number of years now and i have been very happy with it. I found out about it through PC World magazine,

not to sure about the Dell thing. I find that instead of sweating the whole system backup, just make sure you have all your software and operating system disks on hand in case of hard drive failure or the purchase of a new computer. Other than that, to copy the contents of a hard drive to another hard drive, a simple drag and drop will do it. Make sure you have all files un-hidden and un-locked
