I just got my cockateil today. She is 5 months old. She is kinda shy and she hisses when I put my hand in her cage but she doesn't bite when I pick her up. She stays in my hand for about 2 minutes then flies away. I just had someone clip her wings about 10 minutes ago.

WHEN IT IS YOUNG THEY DO HISS THEY SHOULD STOP IN ABOUT 2-3 MONTH. IF YOU PUT A WASH RAG IN BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR CLOTHS THEN YOU PUT IN YOUR BIRDS CAGE. THIS IS SO SHE COULD GET USED TO YOUR SMELL.
NOW TO KEEP HER FROM FLYING OFF IF YOU APPLY A LITTLE PRESSURE WITH YOUR THUMB TO HER FEET THIS WILL SHOW HER THAT YOU ARE THE BOSS AFTER AWHILE OF DOING THIS SHE SHOULD STOP TRYING TO FLY AWAY. IF SHE TRYS TO BITE YOU BLOW EASYLY IN HER FACE OR LITELY TAP HER BEEK.

The wing cliping was one of the best things you could do. It will keep her from crashing into something and flying out the door and freezing to death this winter or being eaten by something. If she don't starve first. Wing cliping makes her depenit on you so she will make closer friends with you.. Get her some cackatiel feed with good mix of seeds and pellets or extruted pellets mix with seeds. They love hot peppers.

I let my tiel pick me and she has never hissed at me yet that I remember. I got her when she was 5 months old as well. She will hiss at my other bird or the cat but not normally at people.

Get your new friend out of the cage as much as you like and let her set on you while you read or are on the computer. I have yet to be able to make mine talk or potty train her. The conure caught on quick on both. Maybe it just takes more time.

Good luck

I forgot one thing. Tiels are bad about getting night fright. They will get spooked and jump or fall off their purch. They land in the bottom of the cage and freak even more and try to jump up and fly to get away and crash into the food bowl or what ever is in the way and it just freaks them even more.

If you open the cage and put your hand in there you will get bit many times hard enough to bring blood. When this happes turn on the light and uncover the cage and let him/her calm down. Maybe tell her everything is ok.

I found to use a small night light and not use a cage cover that is too thick. Or lift the side so the light shines in the cage. Don't put the light close because it makes heat.

Just thought you might like to know. My other bird never has this problem.

Wing clipping is good. You should be able to just put her on your shoulder and she'll stay there. She'll get very used to you that way. Talk to her all the time--invent games to play with her. Ladders was one of the best games I played with my tiels. Have her sit on a finger, then present a finger from the other hand. She'll hop onto that finger. Repeat. Gives her some exercise, and keeps you focused on her. Be sure and talk to her constantly.

Hi, Mine did the same thing, Clipping the wings is a great idea, When you go near their cage they feel threat end take her out even she gets fussy about It don't let her give in, Then once she's out try keeping her close to your heart, hold her near your chest and try to rub her Head she might like it, I did it with mine every time i took her out, after awhile she all ways tilted her head down so i shod scratch it for her. Enjoy

Just let them get used to the environment first before you touch them. Then next I would put some gloves on once they are use to the area. they if you have them try to hold them AMAP(As Much AS Possible). Try to pet them to. Hint DON'T yell at the bird or use a towel to grab them you have to teach them to step up. If they are male they can talk. If you want to know how just email me for anymore help.
