I am very surprised to see someone with alzheimers on this type of medicine and I would suggest getting another opinion from another doctor.

Vicodin is a pain reliever that may cause confusion and xanax is an anti anziety drug that most often will cause some memory problems.

In fact, this may be making things MUCH MUCH worse for her.

I hope the doctors are checking your mother for liver toxicity. I am sure they are. A LFT (liver function test) should be done every three months.

Does she need the Xanax to keep her calm? Vicodin is for pain. Is your mother able to say when she has pain. You may want to look into these things. How do the doctors know your mother is still in pain.

It must be hard for you, but try to keep on top of things for your mom's sake. Good luck to both of you.

generally the human body can become tolerant or dependant. If she has Alzheimers she will be highly unlikely to abuse these two, in younger individuals, abuse is a very big concern if long term use is required. Your mother may just need higher doses as time goes on, your doctor should be helpful if higher doses are needed, all the best,
they are both metabolised in the liver, do not damage the kidneys, but lower doses are recommended in liver disease

You might be surprised to see your mother's confusion actually clear a bit if the Xanax and Vicodin are discontinued.

the possibiity of being addicted to these meds. the longer you can take them, you may become immune to them and they may no longer work as good for you. always a good idea to switch meds around some once in a while.
