there are a lot of good suggestions here, my advice is try all of these.
lavender, masturbation or sex. relaxing in a warm bath with aromatherapy bubble bath or salts, meditation, herbal drinks, exercise earlier in the day and calm mind. not necessarily in that order.
milk and honey works for me, people think honey is a stimulus, but actually it contains sucrose and fructose which the body stores immediately in the liver as glycogen, it doesn't go in the bloodstream and cause sugar highs, what's more, the body actually needs glucose, (which the glycogen is released as.) during the night to do what it needs to do, so after up to a couple of weeks, you'll find getting up easier, with less tiredness and should feel rested.

don't do the caffeine and definitely don't do the alcohol, if you do the alcohol you'll find you become dependent on it to help you sleep, plus, even the smallest amount of alcohol in the system can stop you from dreaming and stops you from reaching the level of sleep where your body becomes rested, this will make your situation worse.
as for the pills, remember that these things are recent and come with side effects, we've been using the natural remedies for millenia and they've been affective.

Exercise early in the evening. This will get your muscles working and help you relax. Go about your usual routine, and when you are ready for bed, stretch a little bit, then lie down and slowly think about relaxing each individual muscle in your body. Start with your head and work your way down. By the time you get to your toes, you should be able to let go and relax into sleep.

The earlier exercise helps you unwind and reduce stress and the relaxation while you're lying down helps to keep your mind from wandering and gives your body a chance to shut down and prepare for sleep.

A less active suggestion...take a relaxing hot shower or bath. Turn the lights down low and have everything set out so that you don't have to think about anything (towel, nightgown, etc.). This way, when you are done with your shower, you can simply get into bed and relax.

Sleepytime tea is made by Celestial Seasonings and works for me. Also, make sure the room you sleep in is dark-that does make a difference. A hot bath before bed can help your body to relax. You might play some soothing music, and light some candles, too. If all else fails, an antihistamine named Sudofed works well. Happy dreams.

I just answered this question on another notice board but take some ginger about one hour before bedtime.
Ginger wine is the most pleasant way that I know and as ginger is a spice used in food it is safe.
Make sure it contains real ginger and not just ginger flavour.
Very tasty in a glass of coke. Non alcholic from local health shop and alcoholic wine from off licence or supermarket about £3 per large bottle

Different people are used to falling asllep doing different things, some read, some listen to music, some watch TV, some count sheep. One way to fall asleep is if you have a pool near your house, that you go for a swim a couple of hours before you sleep then when you get home you'd just be to exhausted to do anything but sleep.

Have a quiet hour BEFORE going to bed. Drink a glass of water. Do not watch TV, play netendo or talk on the phone. QUIET TIME. Maybe read something. When your head hits the pillow.....forget about all things that happened that day. That day is gone. Pick it up the next morning. NO alcohol!!! Pops

Milk is a way to do it without taking drugs. There are high levels of tryptophan in the milk that will be converted to seratonin, that will then be converted to melatonin in the body. Melatonin tells the body to fall asleep. The milk does not have to be warm...Drink 1 or 2 glasses and it should help.

The milk trick works more at night, than during the day when you normally drink it, because your body is more responsive to melatonin at night.

If you live in the US you can buy Tylenol PM, not available in Canada but the same drug company makes Simply Sleep. Both are available over the counter at most drug stores. Not as strong as prescription meds but they do work.
