Laser Speed Guns

The require daily ( at start of each shift) testing. Most have a self test and the officer merely presses a button.

If the system fails to meet the requirements, the unit will have to be taken into a certified service center and calibrated there.

What is often called "calibrating" by the police officer is really just testing the calibration, actual calibration is done electronicly and is done by a service tech who is approved by the manufactor to do service work on the specific make and model

Well gee, as a cop, I guess this is my forte. We do not "calibrate" or "certify" a laser daily. We stand a certain distance from an inanimate object and shoot for known distance. If the laser reads the proper distance, it is fine to use. If not it is removed from service until sent to the manufacturers authorized service location. This is done at the beginning of each day once for each unit. If it is a doppler unit, we have two tuning forks that are used to check the unit.

Absolutely need calibration. Depends on brand. ALSO the officer has to be certified to use the radar gun and in most states you have the right to ask the officer to see the screen where he has caught you speeding. Just don't tick off Barney Fife when you know you're wrong.

Same thing holds true with DWI's or DUI's. The officer has to be certified to use the equipment.

What makes me a bit angry is the law officer, especially young ones, who don't want you to ask anything. They are not Gods. They are supposed to "Protect and Serve". They forget shortly after they get hired!

well yes and no. depends on the model. newer laser guns/pole mounts require daily checking. if the officer pushes the button and it fails. the new modles locks the unit untill repaired. so it keeps from using riged or jimmyed units like the k band or ka bands. all the officer has to do is flip from driving and lock his speed and flip to parked and theres ya trumped up speed.

No calibrating. The unit is tested prior to operation to ensure proper operation but no tuning forks as with radar.

Oh.. absolutely they do. To do this would depend on the manufacturer and one would have to check in the manual that came with the gun.
