I'm taking 20mg of Lexapro daily and if a miss a day if feel like I become irritatable and anxious(sort of how I felt before taking it). My pharm. says it doesn't work way but it definately seems that way. Has anyone else experienced this or is it "in my head"?

I also take 20mg of Lexapro daily. If I get too busy to take it regularly, I don't notice any anxiety until about 3 or 4 days without it. From what I understand, that's pretty typical.

It may be in you head in the sense that you are more aware of your vulnerabilities when you dwell on the fact that you haven't taken your medication. But another possibility might be that 20mg is just barely enough for you, and you do notice sooner when you do without. That's just a guess on my part, though.

Before taking this medicine

It is dangerous to try and purchase Lexapro on the Internet or from vendors outside of the United States. Medications distributed from Internet sales may contain dangerous ingredients, or may not be distributed by a licensed pharmacy. Samples of escitalopram purchased on the Internet have been found to contain haloperidol (Haldol), a potent antipsychotic drug with dangerous side effects. For more information, contact the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or visit www.fda.gov/buyonlineguide.
You should not use Lexaproif you are allergic to escitalopram or citalopram (Celexa), or if:
- you also take pimozide; or
- you are being treated with methylene blue injection.
Do not use Lexapro if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine. After you stop taking Lexapro, you must wait at least 14 days before you start taking an MAOI.
To make sure Lexapro is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- liver or kidney disease;
- seizures or epilepsy;
- diabetes;
- narrow-angle glaucoma;
- heart disease;
- bipolar disorder (manic depression); or
- a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts.
Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using Lexapro. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.
Taking an SSRI antidepressant during pregnancy may cause serious lung problems or other complications in the baby. However, you may have a relapse of depression if you stop taking your antidepressant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking Lexapro. Do not start or stop taking this medicine during pregnancy without your doctor's advice.
Escitalopram can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Lexapro should not be given to a child younger than 12 years old.

my doc explained it this way. Lexapro replaces the natural serotonin that our brain create. If you've been taking it for a while then your brain stops producing serotonin all together. However, it takes it a couple of weeks to see the full benefit of the drug at first, so it would make sense that it would also take a few weeks for it to get out of your system too.
I only take 10mgs and sometimes I forget to take it & I don't see a difference at all.

I am postive that I miss my meds if I miss a dose or two. I take Lexapro, Clonazapam, Trileptal and Seraquel....................never, ever do I want to go back to the "bad days" of my life. Taking meds on a regular basis is just the way it is if I want a quality life and I listen to my body.....it is my best friend!!!!

everyone reacts differently to medications. Maybe missing that one dose did make you irritable especially if you just started taking it. Maybe it is in your head too because you know that the medicine is helping you and making you feel better, then you realize you missed one pill so it could be a subconcious thing. I know that if I miss my dose, I don't sleep so well.

Just missing one dose won't do or any arm. Two days or more, from experience and as my doctor has said, is of concern.

I think that it is all in your head. I have missed doses and nothing has happened to me i think that it is all in your head.
