Please explain why they are needed

It all depends what kind of cables you want. If you have a high def cable box you are going to want the hdmi cable it's the best cable to put out a brilliant picture quality other than standard component cables. For surround sound use thx monster audio cables they too are the best!

Check if your cable box even has HDMI output, it probably doesnt. Call cable company tell them you need some component cables, if you have the digital box they should give you a set, they might give you some digital audio cable too, (SPDIF or digital coax). Free beats those overpriced monster cables by a mile and whether they are better or not is up for debate.
