mother in law in basement and will not move out

You could always put the house up for sale... and, after closing... she'd be on her own.
Perhaps she would get the obvious hint.
You could also take a long vacation with your wife and re-charge. Absence makes the heart grow fonder - and you may come up with some innovative ways to get your in-law as an out-law! ;-)
Best wishes!

Can you lock her in there ? Just ignore her, eventually the loud screaming and knocking will go away ,her screams will diminish to childish whimpers of "please let me out".. soon that will pass also after a few days.
Buy some mice and rats from the pet store and let them run loose.
Play loud music at night, and if she complains tell her that if she don't like it she can move out.
Flush the toilet at 3 a.m. every morning ,set your alarm, whether you have to go or not, that will drive her nuts.
Have your wife fix a lavish dinner and when your mother in law comes upstairs to ask.,"MMM,what's that smell .what are you cooking?",tell her that this meal is for dinner guest for a party that you are throwing. (and don't invite her).
Next time she asks you to drive her somewhere, leave her there ,then when she strolls home in a taxi a few hours later, just tell her you forgot.
Do the driving her and forgetting her at least 2 times a week, she will eventually get the hint.
Any more tips..I have got tons more...believe me..It is not hard to get rid of her..
oh..here's a good one..Take a vacation with your wife without her ,don't call,send postcards..nothing..
Do this repeatedly..as many times as you can..
Get the picture..
Pretend she is not there...ignore her

Two conditions must exist:

1. There must be a comfortable, attractive, affordable alternative elsewhere

2. It needs to be less comfortable, attractive, or affordable in the basement.

Divorce your wife. No, not really, try talking to her and explain she is spending too much time around your house. You appreciate her help but you and your wife need privacy and time alone.

Your mother in law or your mother-outlaw?

Does she have somewhere to go? Does she have enough money to take care of herself? Maybe she is scared to be on her own. Have some compassion.

leave your dirty laundry right outside her bedroom door, or you could just ask her to leave so that you and your wife or husband can have wild monkey sex in the house. Good Luck.
