my god. did i hear this right? he gets punished for peeing in the wrong place because he is old and cant hold it.let me wipe my tears before i take up anymore of your time from your busy schedule. buy him a rug to pee on and baby him.when you or your family get old and cant hold your pee maybe they should put you down. i want my 10 points from a vote.maybe the owners of this elderly dog will come to treat this dog as well as possible in his last days

Take him to the vet and ask if there is anything that can be done. Ask if Casper can still have a happy life in his condition or if putting him down is more humane. If the vet still feels Casper can be happy, then it sounds like your dad is the problem. Tell your dad he is making you sad by punishing Casper for things he can't help. Put gates up when you aren't home so he can only stay in the rooms that aren't carpeted. Give the old dog some dignity and respect and happiness in his late years.

Being and epeleptic does don't make a dog suffer I had a dog that lived to be in his 20's who had epelepticy and I would never have put him down he just passed a week ago.

What I would do to alleviate the urinating is crate him during the time no one is at home. Or baby gate him in a linoleum area. Punishing him for something that is out of his control at his age/health is worse than putting him in a crate. If your fathyer were incontinent, would you put him down? Or make him wear Depends? Give him old towle so if he does urinate in the crate, you can just wash them in bleach. I know a woman who just lost her 19 year old poodle, and he wore DIAPERS since he was 11. When you truly love a dog, you find a way. But you don't need urine soaked carpet either.

I'm so sorry, my mother had a dog that also had seizers and had a hard time controlling his bladder. He also developed arthritis and he snapped at the kids if they got near him. I begged her to put him down because I thought he was suffering. She wasn't ready to let him go, it took a few more months before the vet finally had to tell her he had more tumors. Talk to your vet if you aren't sure, but make sure you are absolutely certain you feel it's the right thing to do. Fell better ;o)

Yes. It's not healthy for him as old as he is to hold it in all day. That's painful and unnatural. I'd have him outside during the day if it wasn't too hot. Dogs are used to it. Maybe his seizures are a mental thing. That can only be decided by your vet. However, if you know that he's in constant pain, that's when you let go of him. We love animals, but it's more humane to let them go slowly than last a few extra years in pain.

Try putting him outside during the day when nobody's home. He needs the fresh air.

He should not be punished for something he cannot help. Keep him outside when you can and dont give him too much water if you are out for the day or overnight. Its difficult but often its training the owner, not the dog in these instances(not meaning to be patronising). My dog used to pee every night and I had the mess to clean up every morning. It doesnt happen now-I take her to the loo before I go out or to bed and I leave her a cupful of water for overnight. Its just the same as with a human-you fill them up before bed-and what happens? Consult your vet regarding medication for the seizures and to check for any urinary infections but its probably just old age-again-just like us humans. Protect the floor with polythene runners/old towels/newspapers etc to soak up any accidents. Try not to leave the dog in an area with carpets. If you can leave it outside more it will be easier. I wouldnt want to put my dog down for this unless I had tried absolutley everything. Is anyone taking the dog to the toilet on a regular basis or are you just waiting for the dog to realise it wants to go? Treat it like potty training-every two hours, take him out to the toilet. Good luck-dont hurry your dcision-it doesnt sound like he is realy suffering, he just needs a bit more regulating.

Oh this is sad, been there. Our beagle lost bladder control and looked at us so sadly , not that we were going to discipline her, but because she knew it was wrong. So don't punish the dog , he can not help it, he has been a pet and loyal for so long, don't make his final time miserable. As for putting him to sleep based on seizures alone, no. I would ask the vet for an opinion, 11 yrs is long time for a beagle and maybe there is an underlying problem as to why he is having accidents. I feel for you, i really do.

Seizures don't hurt and stop punishing for behavior that cannot be helped. Your dad has got a problem. I'm glad he's not a relative of mine. Good luck on whatever you choose. Use your brain (the one you got from your mother). The dog can be gated to the kitchen and pee on tile. I have a feeling your father will do whatever he pleases.

If your dog has a medical condition which effects his ability to "hold in his pee", that is no reason to put him down.

I believe that they make "doggie diapers". Try that. Whatever you do -- DO NOT punish the dog in any way, shape, or form for doing something beyond is control. Him trying to hold it in is like you trying to stop a sneeze, or a cough, or a hiccup.

Don't put him down. Talk to your vet and your Dad.
