Take away his game privileges, and explain to him that bad words are big people words. And that he can't say them until he's an adult. My youngest son got in trouble in the 1st grade for calling someone a b*tch at school. His teacher said she had the hardest time not laughing because when he was told on, and then asked what it was he said, he sounded out the word just like they had been learning. "Bah-it-ch." She told him that they all know the bad words, but that doesn't mean they need to say them. So he got game privileges revoked for a week. And since we don't have cable either, he read a lot of books. He didn't swear at school again.

It would help to learn where he learned that word. Since there is a good chance he learned it in public, or heard it used on TV, or some other place, it is a good idea to see where he picked it up. Then explain to him it shouldn't be used by someone his age. Just because others use it is no excuse for him to do so. Take away his game for a few days is good (tell him why), but if he continues, perhaps some more stronger punishment is needed (wash out his mouth or something like that). Maybe not PC, but effective.

I'm glad you are checking up on him. All the serious ideas were good. I have to wonder where he learned it. If he learned it on the site, I would consider banning him from the site. If he hears it at home, it will be kind of hard to tell him only adults can use it. That won't work. A lot of how you deal with this also depends on his age. If he is young enough that you don't think he understands what it means, I think you should be monitioring his on-line time more closely. The internet can be a dangerous place for kids.

First off, make sure the computer/game console is in a public place (like the upstairs hall) where you can easily monitor activity.
Secondly, sit him down and explain what he did wrong. Explain that he may be playing against older people who don't care about using that type of language, but YOU do care.
Put the game console off limits for a few days. Play with him, read, help him re-decorate his room. Give him some attention and show him there are more productive and fun uses of his time.
Make it a good memory.

It's just a word. Why should it be treated worse than any other word? I use profanity on websites, but if you're so paranoid, tell him to use another word to replace it with that doesn't sound completely dorky.

I would take away his computer priviledges until he learns not to be using that type of language. I would ask him where he heard it and I would also tell him that it is not appropriate to be saying.
