Why don't you try a "system restore". It's located in start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Choose a restore point from a time that was before you started noticing the error message. See if that works before you consider re-installing windows.

MSVCR71.dll is the Mcrosoft Visuall C++ Runtime Library. A program you recently installed (Yahoo messenger?) probably requires it. If you installed any programs recently, try re-installing them again. If not then the link below will allow you to download it and provides instructions on installing. Don't re-install Windows XP just because of this problem

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcr71 - go there download the missing .dll file, THEN copy to your "WINDOWS" Folder.
If your computer came pre-installed with WinXP - during the boot process there should be an option called "System Restore" by hitting the function keys - you'll loose your data that your created after you bought your PC, but it should theoretically work.

Put your original Windows XP CD in the tray, start the computer, and boot off the CD, and when prompted, reinstall Windows.
If that doesn't fix your problem, reformat and then reinstall.

Hello.
I hope you made a set of Recovery Disks. When XP boots, it normally offers you tthree options and tells you which key to press for which one. One is for reinstalling the operating system using your recovery disks. If you don't have any, contact Microsoft. You're permitted to have one set of recovery disks. Try using fhe Search function from fthe Start Button to find a reinstallation wizard.
Good luck, friend,
JB :)
