Bad neighborhoods in
Brooklyn -- Bedford Stuyvesant, Bushwick, East New York, Brownsville.
Queens -- Jamaica, Jamaica Estates.

Generally, the better, safer neighborhoods are closest to Manhattan. Poorer people live farther away. Brooklyn has a high concentration of public projects (govt-subsidized hi-rise housing). Most of Queens is safe, except 2 areas mentioned above.

Good neighborhoods in
Brooklyn -- Brooklyn Heights (yuppies), Williamsburg (artsy community), Park Slope, Carroll Gardens.
Queens -- Long Island City (yuppies but industrial), Astoria, Jackson Heights (nice mix of people, food stores, restaurants -- Melting Pot).

bedford-sty, i wouldn't go there in daylight in brooklyn and jamaica in queens. can't say its full of crimes, but i'd say you make a good target for mugging if you're different. you dig what i'm saying? nope i'm not racist, just speaking from experience.
