Is it a good idea to buy a car from a private dealer? I can't see any particular advantage as such but the disadvantage is that such a dealer would sell a car at a price higher than a private party but won't have an established dealer's brandname (for whatever worth), credibility (if any) or benefits (e.g., a month's warranty) to go behind it. Any thoughts/suggestions/experiences?

If you buy a car from a private party, the person cannot be held liable for repairs he didn't know the car needed. The best advise is to always take that car to your mechanic and have it checked out. A car dealer has a responsibility, unless otherwise stated, and the car is safe to drive. (That does not mean that it doesn't need repairs - like a tune up).

You hit on a few major issues from purchasing from private dealers. My main problem with these private dealers are mainly the vehicles. Since they don't care about their reputations as they can simply move their operations to another city, the vehicles they carry are usually questionable ones. I would avoid them at all cost.

Please take a mechanic with you. I purchased a car once without taking such action and 2 months later I had to replace the motor. This vehicle ended up costing me double, so tread wearily with these rogues.
Never go in blind because they can and do rip consumers' off.

I would never buy a used car until I have it checked out by my mechanic. Any reputable person will let you do this. If they don't, run.
