Nothing is safe in life.
You have to be careful to avoid fraud. While paying over net, see if the encryption is 128 bit. If so, then it is safe.
When paying through a credit card, better to have a separate card with a fixed amount of credit limit. So if there is a fraud, then the damages are limited.
When buying from sites like ebay etc. check for the history of the seller before you jump. There are number of cases where they try to rip off

Yes. I buy airline tickets, camera gear, books and all sorts of stuff over the internet all the time. It's often the cheapest way. Two important things though:
* Make sure your computer is secure. If your computer is riddled with virusses/ spyware, there is a chance that someone can steal your credit card information. To keep my computer secure, I use a virus guard (free from Avast), a firewall (free from Sygate), I occasionally scan for spyware (free program from Ad-Aware), and I even use Firefox as my browser instead of Internet Explorer (also free, from Mozilla.com).
* Make sure the store you buy from can be trusted. There are a lot of fraudulent companies out there with websites that LOOK reputable. For camera gear in the USA, I like B&H, Ritz Cameras, and Beach Cameras. These stores are 100% legit, and they have a wide selection and great prices.

I shop almost exclusively over the internet, as has my wife for 5 or 6 years. It's as safe as any other form of mail order buying.

I say not because the person like lets say that they are selling something on E-Bay, they could hack a picture and put it on there and say this is brand new, which the picture says it is brand new. But they could have the same thing but in crappy condition and definitely not what it states in the picture. But in person, you can mostly see the item up close and right there. So the answer is no, it is not safe. Also consider the number of credit card identity thefts because of on-line buying...

If since this is posted in the Camera section of Consumer Electronics you mean camera stuff then:
I uses KEH camera out of Atlanta, and I am all the way in Alaska, they have done me well for close to 20 years. I also would recommend Wolf Camera.

Yes, its safe for the most part. There are some websites that actually rate companies in terms of reliabilty, safety, etc.
I have never had any problems, mostly because I don't trust going to sketchy, no name sites.

Sure I've never had any problems. Just use the well-known sites, though.
