yes it is true and this is the best way a cat can tell you that you are now in their world

I've never known a cat to do this, but I guess it's possible if that's what the Vet said. You need to put the stuff away you don't want it to chew.
Ask your Vet about sprays that stop the cat from chewing things. There's one called "Feliway" that you spray on the object, NOT the cat, which stops it from chewing things.
It's available at TSC Farm stores or probably a Vet's office has something similar to it.
Walmart and Kmart do not carry it.
Cats chew to release tension. Give it some toys or stuff of its own to chew on.

Cats do tend to choose someone as their own person. When your cat is lonely, or missing your daughter, this is his way of coping. I agree with the idea of giving him something of your daughter's like an old stuffed animal, or a blankie....
You may also want to get a 2nd cat- the companionship helps keep them from getting bored when their people are not home.

Cats (especially kittens) love to chew on shoes, bur ours have not ruined them. I think they just like the smell. Your cat is probably also sharpening claws on her clothes. Do you clip his nails? It might help to just allow him to have something that smells like her, for example a stuffed animal she cuddled with when she was smaller, or a scrunchy that she has worn in her hair. Cats are territorial, very curious and into everything. We have one kitten who is almost religious about guarding the fruit bowl. I once had a cat who was jealous of flower arrangements or maybe bothered by them. He used to bite the heads off of some flowers.
