Canker sores are very annoying and can obviously be painful. I used to get them all the time. Sometimes I'd have 3-5 at once. They can be caused or triggered by different things including stress. After searching the web I found that an ingredient in most toothpastes called SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) which gives toothpaste its foaminess, is also very irritating. If you're prone to getting mouth sores try a toothpaste without SLS. Sensodyne and Burt's Bees are a couple that don't have it. After I switched to these toothpastes, the frequency and duration of the sores was greatly reduced. I hardly ever get them anymore and when I do they go away much sooner. Try this and see for yourself. Of course your current sores will still have to heal, but your current toothpaste which probably contains SLS could be irritating the sores which will slow the healing time. Best of luck to you :~)

Put gentian violet on it. You can get tincture of gentian violet without a prescription at any drugstore, and it's cheap. It's like purple ink. You can put it on the canker and it will make it feel a lot better. Rinse your mouth out and spit the water out. The gentian violet will mostly just stick to the white part of the canker. If you eat, you have to do it again. Also get in the habit of taking vitamin C every day.

I get a lot of canker sores myself, and I use a powder called Alum which burns the hell out of it, but it numbs the pain of the sore for a few hours.

It's probably very irritating, and if you accidentally bite on it, it's like Hell.
I believe it has something to do with diet.
Try eliminating sugar and use more garlic and onions and vinegar.
You may never see a canker sore again.
I know I don't.

Try a mouthwash called peroxal. It kills the bacteria & helps the inflamation to go down quickly causing the canker sore to be less painfull. You should be able to find this product at your local pharmacy.

Go to the drug store and get some peroxide and some oral anesthetic paste containing benzocaine. Put a few drops of peroxide on the sore first (will help clean it and make it heal faster.) Wait a minute or two, spit, and put a little bit of paste on the sore.

Wet your finger and stick it in salt then rub the salt on the sore. It may burn like hell for a couple of minutes but it will clear up by the morning.
