I am a stylist, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that any hair care product that is home use is a horrible thing to do to your hair. All home hair care products are made from alkaline. That soft, healthy feeling is a glossy coating. Alkaline turns your hair into mush and eventually your hair can thin and fall out. What is worse when you actually go to a salon and get color, it is difficult to get through home hair care products and many mistakes occur from that. My best suggestion--- go to a salon. If you can not afford it, go to a beauty school. If a student screws up a teacher will fully refund and fix their mistake. Most students, if taught well do well. Go online and find the best one in your area. But do go to a salon and use their products and that made escpecially for professionals. Think of it like going to a doctor... you can diagonis yourself, you can't do your own hair eithar.

I'm not a colorist, but I've been doing my own highlights for years. About four years ago, I started using MEGA BLONDES from Sally Beauty Supply. You buy the developer and color separately. I usually get level 30 developer and the Lightest Natural Blonde color. I mix them in equal parts in a needle-nose bottle and gently squeeze straight from the bottle onto my roots. Since I do only specific strands along my normal part, this is so fast and easy; however, it does have to develop for about 60 minutes before washing. My natural color is a dark ash blonde (some may call that a light brown), but you should do a test somewhere obscure before doing the noticeable parts. I love using this method because I don't have to use a cap or go through the long process of foils. It looks very natural--very subtle. Good luck.
