Generally the sunroof is solid and is the same as the roof (metal) where a moonroof is usually a piece of glass that you can see through with a slider overhead to cover it.

"Sunroof" is the generic term used to describe an operable panel in a vehicle roof which can let in light and/or air. "Moonroof" is a term created by Ford in the 70s, yet is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs.

sun roof just pops up and is mainly for show; but a moon roof actually retracts into the ceiling of a vehicle or in some form actually leaves a hole where it was. other than that it is mainly a marketing deal on the names
