It should be reading 512 MB. If you have Windows XP, right click My computer and select properties. If your video is part of your motherboard, you may show a little less e.g. 504MB. This is because some system RAM is used for video. If you are showing half or less, then your system doesn't like the RAM you put in.

I use XP and was running at 128mb. I added more memory and went up to 512mb, but my screen only displays 496. Why? Because the video portion of my pc needs 16mb just to function and it made sure it grabbed its share before the rest of the pc could - LOL. Sounds silly, but it's true.

If you upgrade to 512MB - then that's what you should have. If you add 512 to the 128 (if you have the right RAM slots on your motherboard) you'd have 640MB. Windows would show this number in KB.

640?
Dont worry if its a LITTLE off
one gig is not 1,000 meg. it's 1,024
one meg is not 1000 k. its 1024
one k is not 1000 bytes... its 1024
so the higher your memory...the larger the diff in actual memory, and what they tell you you really have
also, your video card MIGHT be sharing some of the memory...
