1) Mild temperatures.
2) Free time.
3) Being able to sleep the whole night through.
4) Family and friends.
5) Privacy and quiet.

That's six things, but I would think that would cover it.

And I'm glad you were able to return safely! Thank you for your service!

The Ladies or lady, your family, your friends, your car and your dog. Welcome Home?

Register with the VA in the first few months of your return and tell them all about all the problems or worries you are experiencing, like having trouble sleeping, eating, being effective with your family, friends or lovers, bouts of anger, depression, feeling out of sorts or disconnected from your old friends and your old habits, routines.
Feeling like you have to go back Iraq. Or feelings like you need to bunker in or hide in the garage. Having problems driving. Panic attacks and so.
Also, get every injury down on paper at the VA or the in service Doctors Office. Like if you hurt your back, neck, ears, all the senses, legs or arms, digestive track and system. Also, no matter how you did it, fight in a bar, just all physical problems. Remember this can and they do get worse over time.
Tell them about every traumatic situation you experienced, and tell them how it has changed you. There is very good and legitimate reasons to do this. One reason is, when you get out of the service it becomes an adversarial relationship with the VA.
You have to prove whatever is disabling you. So write everything down; Buddies names and contact info. If anyone was KIA or wounded in your unit, if you were caught in one of the explosions or mines; if you were in firefights, if you wounded or shot or killed someone, if you witnessed American soldiers killing kids, ladies or old people and so on. Write it all down with names and dates. I may hurt, but do it anyway.
PTSD can creep up on you or come all at once and your will be surprized but prepare your self for it by paying attention to your inner life. These events in Iraq are what is called stressors, and it is important to you and family to deal with these stessors up front and ASAP.
After you get out of the Service, You need to file a claim for disability including every thing that I have listed and anything else by way of a claim. If you need advice, call Swords to Plowshares. Ask for legal and ask for advice. 415-252-4788. Mike Blecker is the Director. He served in Vietnam as an Grunt in the field. He started Swords to help other Combat Vet...
Every soldier cowards and feels hopeless in combat. Most of the time they do not know that others are feeling the same way. It is a normal reaction to an Abnormal situation. And, often it is just impossible to talk about for a long time, but talk anyway and get a counselor you can talk to.

I worked with combat vets for many years.
Great Question! Good Luck.
