No I dont expext everyone to speak english, and as a matter of fact, if I were to travel abroad, I would try my best to speak that country's native tongue. It should be that way for all immigrants coming to america.

I don't know that this is a fair generalization. Unfortunately, a lot of illegal immigrants are very poor people who come here and have to work very hard to send money back home. They are not well-educated and do not have the means to get an education here. Their children may do much better at learning English. This is not a justification of illegal immigration, just the reality of what their lives are like here. That's why we need to do something to make sure that the people coming into our country to take jobs do so legally and with access to the education they will need to succeed in our society. Historically, many first-generation working class immigrants have had a hard time learning English. When I lived in NYC years ago, I had an Italian landlord whose English was fairly minimal (although he always could figure out how to tell us the rent was going up again and that the boiler wasn't going to be working for a couple days...) even though he had lived in the USA for 20 years. Whenever immigrants live among lots of other immigrants from the same country, they will tend to speak their native language as their primary language. Often the parents rely on their children as translators. Assimilation takes time and the opportunity to learn.

Illegals have a problem. They are illegals. That means they have to live discreetly, which means they mostly live and work with other illegals, and thus do not take classes at the local community colleges.

If we start giving them papers and making them legal, they will almost immediately do things differently.

This nation went through this same racism and hatred back in the 19th Century when most of our Anglo ancestors came over here. The Irish were especially hated at that time If a girl dated an Irish man, her parents tossed her out in the street as a ruined woman.

With all our alleged superiority, you would think eventually we woud learn. But, I guess a nation can be rich and prosperous, and its citizens can still be stupid.

People are under the impression that America doesn't have an official language. I thought it was a given that the official language is english because that's what Americans speak. Even the first immigrants who didn't know english learned it. I mean, isnt that why america speaks english now?

From my experience, some immigrants find English too difficult to learn. Others do not know where they can learn English; how to access those resources at community colleges for free! Still, others come here knowing how to speak English. They all want a better life. I think they need to go through the legal channels like other people do.

Americans English is not even a correct English.
Most American that i have met who speaks good English must have gone to school(higher education).
Most Americans speaks Americans English, but cannot write a good essay in a school settings.
Britain is the one that owns English and good use of grammar.

A lot of people here speak spanish, so as long as there is people that speak it, they will not feel the need of learning it. I think that if those people are old, then it is acceptable the fact that they don't want to learn english, but if they are young then at some point or another they'll have to. It's the only way to find jobs.
