Because praying a prayer will not get your "get out of hell free card". You need to "put off the old man, and put on the new". This is not an easy thing to do as you have to change your lifestyle- over time if you have too, but the truth will set you free, but the unsaved, or unbelivers will laugh at you, wait for you to screw up once, you will feel alone until you get some good Christian friends in church, and know that you can have a personal relationship with Him. God will send trials your way on purpose. He will test you, build character and patience in your life. No one said that the Christian life would be easy, but it is that simple to GET saved. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved". That part is easy, but not the rest of it. You have to stand for what's right. Though our hardships are nothing compared to what the believers of the church age went through.

Paul did not say you must go through much tribulation to enter into the kingdom of God, he is saying that you will go through much tribulations and it will be for the sake of the kingdom of God. Connect this with 1 Corinthians 4:9-13 to understand what Paul was saying in Acts 14:22.

1 Cor.4:9: For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
10: We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.
11: Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;
12: And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:
13: Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.

When a believer accepts Jesus, is exactly when satan attacks the hardest. He's not going to make it easy for the believer.

This is where the true believer learns to hang onto Jesus, and learn to trust in God. It's a step by step process, which sometimes can take you down some paths that are difficult in life

He meant life here is hard for the believer. When he wrote that, Jesus's followers were imprisoned and beaten and even killed for their faith. That still happens in the world today but not usually to us in the USA. We may get teased or shut out because of our faith but that is all. If you have accepted Jesus as your savior and have asked forgiveness for your sins you will go to Heaven. He expects us to live worthy of this wonderful gift but you do not have to do "works" or good deeds to get into Heaven or else salvation would not be a free gift.

It is not the act of accepting Jesus that produces tribulation; it is living in this world that does. We have to live here still...and as Jesus said, in life we would have much tribulation. Paul echoes that verse.

A lot of people have the impression that as soon as you accept Christ as your Savior that you will go to Heaven, but in the Bible Jesus says that not only do you have to believe, repent, accept Him as your Lord, be baptized, and turn from your sinful ways and put on the new robe and follow Him.
We are to turn our back on sin, and live as Jesus did, sin-free.
