YES !!! Dogs can get depressed.
Have seen it in a couple of younger dogs we had, when we had to put an older dog down.
They can also Pout !
Hard to tell what could be causing this.
Is she getting a lot of attention? Not by your standards, but hers.
Retrievers feel like they are part of the family...is she being left out of something she used to be part of?
Could also be physical problems?
Good Luck, and you might try sitting on the floor and paying some special attention to her, see how she reacts.
Might sound funny but have you tryed talking to her and telling her how much she is loved...trust me it works. A message from one heart to another is always understood.

Boredom can depress a dog. When I moved from Maryland to Texas my dog got extremely depressed. Try more walks. I found that dogs don't have a great sense of time so even a 10 minute walk can be effective. Rotate his toys. Try to stay away from antidepressants if possible. I don't understand your concern over the anti social behavior around strangers. Perhaps she feels her territory has been invaded and wants to protect you. Have a nice day.

Dogs can get depressed. I don't know why yours would be. Have there been any changes in her life? I had two Great Danes and one died and the other lay around grieving and not eating for about 4 days. I wasn't really ready to get another dog, but I did because I was worried I'd lose her too. She perked right up as soon as I brought the new Great Dane home, so I know they can be depressed.

She might have been poorly socialized as a baby. puppies need to meet a lot of strangers in their home territory, otherwise they can get very territorial . dogs aren't like people. if they do get depressed it would be because of a chemical imbalence, not because Lassie didn't think he looked nice with that new hair cut. I would suggest taking her to meet some people in neutral territory, like a park or someone elses house. make sure your friends know how you want them to behave

she may have a nutrition problem, review her diet by reading the ingredients and info on the bag of your dog food, also consider giving her more exercise. Many dogs will get "depressed" when they don't have a chance to run and burn energy.
If neither of these work, get a vet appointement, it may be a medical problem

Try spending more time with her and if that doesn't work take her to the vet. She could have a physical problem that you are interpreting as depression.

uhm i'm not sure if that can happen. maybe you should try giving it some more attention. i know we just recently got a puppy and my other dog is jealous so she is always acting depressed so we just give her some attention and she's fine.
