A small apartment
Needs to get along very well with people and children, even strangers
Can be left alone for a work day.
Doesn't need a large amount of exercise.
Not too hard on furniture, carpet, etc.

Several suggestions of breeds would be helpful, also any good links.

Thanks!

OLDER dog

Puppies are too acvitve and housetraining while in apartment will be insanely hard...puppies need lots of excercise and are NOT good with kids... too mouthy and too jumpy
(do you have landlord permission)???

NO TERRIERS - too intelligent - easily bored - bred to hunt, chew, kill so will destroy an apartment if you dont keep them busy- not always good with kids

NO bordercollies or similar smart dogs again they will be bored

not all small dogs are suited either, some bigger older dogs will be better than a smaller younger dog

Shih Tzu, Pug, Golden Retreiver... or a MUTT

seriously go to your local SPCA or Humane Society and look at what they have.. explain what you are looking for and ask to be put on a waiting list.. an older dog will be best for you

I would suggest a shih-tzu, a pug, a boston terrier or a small mixed breed. Shih-tzus are very easy to get along with. They like everyone, don't shed and are small. The only problem with them is that they need to be groomed every 6 wks or so. A pug is a dog that likes everyone, rarely bites and are somewhat lazy, yet act like a puppy most of their lives (fun-loving and playful not chewing and inside accidents). Their drawback is that for a small dog, they shed lots. A boston terrier is also a family-type dog, friendly and playful. Don't be afraid of "terrier" in the name. They rarely bite and are quiet. Their only drawback would be they are more expensive than the others...probably $500-1000. A small mixed breed could be a combination of the traits you desire ie no shedding, no grooming, friendly ect. They could also be a dog that you adopt from a humane society thereby helping them, you and the rest of us by giving a good home to a homeless dog.
Hope this helps, I'm a Licensed Veterinary Technician

Consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. Nicknamed 'the 45mph couch potato' these dogs are very calm, low energy and low maintenance dogs. They are natural sprinters - which means that a 10 minute burst of energy usually results in four hours of napping. They do not need to run a lot (if at all) and can be very happy getting all of their excersise through leash walking. Inside all they want to do is lay down and snuggle. Greys do very well being left alone for a work day. They will adjust their schedules so that they sleep when you are out and are awake when you are home. They literally take up one couch cushion or one large sized dog bed/crate. They are a low shedding single coated breed and they also do not produce the amounts of dander and skin oils that many large breeds do (so they have very little 'doggy' smell). It is also extremely rare to hear a greyhound bark which is nice when you live close to your neighbors. One more benefit of adopting a retired racer is that they have been in contact with humans every day of their lives. From the day they are born on the farm to the training center and racetrack they came into contact with lots of humans and were always taught to respect and obey humans. They are well socialised and also desensitised to large crowds and noisy situations. It is the rare grey who does not like children and if you adopt through an organization that fosters dogs before adopting them out they may have dogs who are currently living with small children (I foster for my group and have a four year old).

Any dog you get will not like to be left alone, most dogs need excersise, and last but not least they love sleeping on the furniture when your not home so maybe get a fish.

Chihuahua - can get their exercise in a small amount of room playing fetch - some say they are snippy and mean but ours loves everyone!!

Same with a small terrier - can exercise them indoors with play.
