I would think so. My 20 month old doesn't say everything clearly. She has about 15-20 words she speaks clearly, but other words can only be "translated" by myself or other close family members!! Friends of mine have a child that's a few months older than my daughter that doesn't speak nearly as well as she does. But, also, there's a child that we know that is 5 months younger than my daughter, and she speaks better than my daughter (this child can even recite her ABC's!!) But, if you're genuinely concerned, consult your pediatrician.

Not many of the 2 year olds that I have met speak clearly. Give him time and let him talk away. He's only 2.

Yes toddles go at their own pace and by kinderkarten/1st grade they are all pretty much the same.
If you do have concerns ask your doctor.
My nephew developed alot slower than my neice. She out talked him by far. Now they are both almost 4 and they are almost developing neck and neck.
My other nephew is almost 4 also and still has not caught up to my other nephew who is also almost 4. They all are different at two.,three four and five, but by six they,re all about on the same level.
.
Their pediatritions all think they are thriving just fine.

If you are concerned, have him checked out with a speech & hearing specialist clinic through Children's hospital. He can be evaluated and interacted with to pinpoint any area that might benefit.
This does turn up with male children having delayed speech. Different general reasons that could be addressed like syntax, processing, multi-lingual enviornments, confusion. They will help recognize if there is anything they can help with. They will interact with him in different ways to get concepts across and they even use great computer educational games to get them on the right track and stimulated.

Right before my daughter turned 2 she didn't talk very much either. I ended up quitting my job to stay home with her, after I started being with her all the time I realized she WAS talking and I just couldn't understand her. Now she is 2 1/2 I can understand everything she says, but no one else can.

My baby cousion has the same thing! He is turning three, but can barly speak, only small words once in a while, everything else is jiberish. They took him to the doctor and said he was 4 months behind in speaking development. I think it is the same case for this child you are talking about. So I think he will speak fine, but is just behind. I would take him to the doctors anyway though.(just in case)

I had a three yr. old who used individual words very well, but his sentances were limited to only two or three words... My younger brother seldom spoke at ALL til he was 4, then it was Full Sentances (and he hasn't shut up since)! I know a 13 yr old Girl who is perfectly normal, except that she can't seem to speak a clear word, she ALWAYS sounds like she is "whining" If he's not easier to understand when he's THREE, THEN worry....

Yes, it is normal. The best way to help them develop clearer speech so that they can be easily understood by others is to repeat back correctly what they are trying to say so that they hear it correctly, then ask them to say it again. Praise them like crazy when they get it right. Do not use babytalk or babywords with them anymore. Not even for their bodily functions or body parts.

YES now when my son was 2 I took him to the doctor insisting he had a speech problem. The doc is like does he say about 20 words at random so I thought about it and was like yeah. the doc is all he is fine. Now he is 3 and you can't shut him up. He talks so good that people think he is older. usually they start adding new words to their vocabulary daily and its amazing! Of course talk to the doctor.
