I just moved to Wisconsin from Michigan, and I noticed that just about everyone here says soda, not pop, but people from Minnesota say pop. Wisconsin is right between Minnesota and Michigan. What's the deal here?

It is a regional thing not state. You may find other parts of Wisconsin say pop. I grew up in the Chicago area and we called it pop but when I moved to sw Illinois they called it "sody" which I could not bring myself to do so I called it soda, now everyone seems to use soda. When I lived in Florida, I worked with people from all over the US so I heard pop, soda pop, soda, soft drink and cola. Its one of those mysteries of the universe we may never solve.

I was born in Wisconsin, but now live in Ohio. Everytime I come back to visit, I notice some of the oddities. Yes, they do say soda. When I ask for a pop, everyone looks at me like I'm crazy. They also say bubbler for a water/drinking fountain. One time my dad asked me if I brough a pair of bibs to go out in the woods in. I had no idea what he was talking about until I learned that bibs is the word for overalls. They also reserve the word gym shoes for only really expensive athletic shoes. I went to a store and said I needed a pair of gym shoes. Then the guy asked for what sport. When I tried to clarify, they told me the word I needed was sneakers.

I agree, Wisconsin is wierd.

I call it pop, and I'm from Wisconsin. But my family moved here from Pennsylvania/New York before I was born. I see a lot of Upper Michigan influence in Wisconsin. I've been blaming that.

I'm from Ohio. We call it pop here. I notice they call it soda in West Virginia, and I notice they call it soda in Texas. I got laughed at really hard for saying pop in Texas. But saying soda sounds kind of 60s to me or something. It might just be what somebody prefers saying though.

I was raised in NH and say "soda." We've also got "grinders" there instead of "subs" or "heros."

My Dad, also a New Englander said "tonic."

Now I'm in Ohio and they say "Pop" here and I find myself saying it too sometimes. Sometimes I say "soda pop." I'm feeling a little like I have dual personality.

Sorry, don't know about the Wisconsin phenomenon.

I am originally from the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin, where it was commonly called soda. I moved to Iowa many years ago where it is called pop seemingly from border to border. I believe some of the more rural parts of WI may call it pop, one place I know of is the south-western border around Prairie Du Chane (sp?).
