I need to explain mileage to a younger relative. I know that, metrically, a mile is measured as 5,280 ft. (1,760 yds or 8 furlongs, or whatever), but in physical distance, a mile would be from where to where?? Any geographic example within the US is fine. Thanks!

I used to tell my kids that if they walked for as long as a TV show (30 minutes) they would travel about a mile

Adults walk more like 3 or 4 miles per hour but I think 2 mph is not so far off for a child

Get on a treadmill and have the kid walk a mile. I'm not trying to be cruel by any means, but that really does give an idea of how long a mile is- way too long!! :)

i don't know if telling a geographical example would make your relative understand. take him/her in a car and drive one mile. then they'll know.
