You have to be there early. You get put in cattle pens with no booze and no toilets for many hours. Watch it on TV and be comfortable.

Make reservations somewhere in the Times Square area NOW, even though Phillie is only a few hours away. But, with Dec 31st falling on a Sunday, you may have to book for the weekend.
Would prefer to stay home and watch it on TV along with all the activities from other major cities around the world. With security
heightened in NYC -- especially that night -- you must be out of you mind!

this is the typical procedure for Times Square ball drop.
at 5-6pm, the police start closing all traffic into and out of times square with 57th st at the north boundary, 42nd st to the south, 6th ave to the east, and 8th ave to the west. it's a big area to cordon off.
there will be a security and bag check at each entry point. one entry point on 42nd st, one on 57th. i think 1-2 others. no glass bottles, coolers, alcohol allowed.
subways will be closed in the area (N/R/Q/W trains bypass 49th st.)
in years pass, the police used a crowd control tactic of holding people in "cattle pens" essentially interlocked metal barricades that didn't allow any movement in/out of your spot in the freezing cold. after a lawsuit in 2004 before the RNC demostrations, that practice was temporarily suspended. don't know if they will bring back cattle pens.
you will probably be standing there in zero degree weather for several hours, with no toilets (there are some portable toilets, but expect massive lines).
......just stay at home and watch it on TV. or get reservations at some of the chain restaurants, or hotels in the area with a view of the ball.....

First of all, take Amtrak or NJ transit. Driving in NYC is a nightmare. You could probably even take the train home after the ball drops.

I was told that they have porta potties.
You should go if it is really important to you. So what if you get blown up by a terrorist. At least you will go out with a bang, no pun intended.
Like one of the previous people said, take NJ Transit or Amtrak and get there early.

lengthy island is prevalent as "the large apple" because long in the past a admired human beings hero (Johnny Appleseed) planted a unmarried seed in the midst of the city. Then, in a uncommon warp in area-time, a boy named Jack planted a seed he believed to be magical interior an same spot. In what continues to be considered a marveling organic and organic progression, both seeds fused mutually on a molecular element. After a uncommon rain, the seed hybrid grew into an apple 300ft tall and approximatively 330ft huge. The strangest ingredient being the absence of a tree. it type of feels the apple replaced into thoroughly typical, except it grew instantly from the floor with its own roots like a beanstalk of a few kind. for decades yet to go back, human beings ought to visit the city and seem up on the no longer plausible fruit and picture "it really is a great apple". After a lengthy time period human beings began with regard to the city itself as "the large apple". yet then, 1943 Oct eleventh, some thing unusual handed off. because the city laid to relax, the nighttime once again upon them, there replaced right into a brilliant flash of pink mild. The flash lasted for very nearly 4-5 seconds. no human being is for certain what led to the flash, yet as quickly because it replaced into over the apple had basically disappeared. no longer actually had it vanished, the floor it had grown from had closed as if it weren't in any respect there. some say the apple had grown so great it created some type of fruity supernova and collapsed in on itself in a black hollow. some say the extraterrestrial beings to blame for the lack of existence of the dinosaurs got here again and destroyed the apple as well. We ought to not in any respect comprehend precisely what handed off that nighttime, yet one ingredient is for certain. That replaced right into a huge-*** apple.
