Are you reffering to the Microchip? If you are thenthey are a small chip (about the size of a grain of rice) that is implanted under the dogs (or any pet really) skin between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique number which conntects to the manufacturer of the chip. You register your information to the company and they keep on record attatched to the chip Number. This way if your dog is lost and brought to a vet clinic or shelter they can scan the dog, get the number, call the company and contact you in a matter of minutes. they have not come up with a chip that can be traced such as by satellite or anything like that, they are all still too big to implant under a dogs skin! These are wonderful devices that helped me return many stray pets to their owners when i worked at my local humane society, I would reccomnd it to anyone! For more info you can visit Avid.com or 24petwatch.com

Does you mean microchips? There are several -- AVID and Home Again.
This are NOT tracers. They do not work off of GPS. They are identification. If the dog is found, he can be scanned, and the scanner will read the radio "barcode" in the chip, and it will show on the screen. A person can then call the "barcode" number into AVID or HomeAgain, who will give them the last know contact info for the dog's owner.

RFID or Microchips? contrary to popular belief, they're not doggy GPS. you can't track a dog with them, but your beloved pooch runs away and gets picked up, all vets offices, pounds and rescues have the equipment to scan the pups for the microchip, and if they have one, the microchip emits a signal with a number that corresponds to his/her owners information. if the dog doesn't have it's tags on, for whatever reason, it can be safely returned to its owner. the chip is about the size of a grain of rice. though the needle used to put it in scared me, the puppy barely noticed it. One one hand, putting a computer chip in your dogs body doesn't seem right, but if something happens to him...at least you know he won't get euthanized because he can't be identified...

Be careful with microchips for dogs--some companies implant chips that can only be used by their detectors-- If you plan on getting this done for your dog--do some research about the most widely used chip detector-and then get that one-otherwise it's useless.
