The easiest way is to get them both when they are very young. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats. My oldest Cat, a 10 year old Manx is very territorial, but he will put up with a puppy and put it in it's place when the get out of ine with him.

Give them some time to get to know each other and they will establish their pecking order. Just don't be too harsh on them when the snip at each other, it is their natural way to establish dominance.

But be around to mediate, should it get out of hand, and don't leave them alone together right off the bat.

Depends on the age...If the cat is older it may be a wait it out situation. They are very adaptable. If it get bad you may have to choose. Its not the best solution but if the cat is older it may have had a bad experience with a dog and therefor is defensive regardless....you can also try slowly bringing the cat around and reintroducing them. Good luck...
