Common belief is that that the hamburger came from Hamburg, Germany. It actually came from Hamburg, New York. the word "Hamburger" comes from the German city, Hamburg.

There is some debate as to how it originated. A company from Akron, Ohio headed by the Menches brothers is one of the companies that lays claim to making and originating the hamburger.

Because they were said to originate in Hamburg, Germany.

More precisely, a patty of sauteed ground beef was called a "Hamburg Steak." Whether this was meant as a description of its origin or a derisory reference (much as melted cheese is called "Welsh Rabbit") is disputed.

However, this "Hamburg Steak was served plain, not on a bun.

The modern hamburger has disputed origins with places from Athens, Texas to St. Louis (during the 1904 Exposition) claiming it.
