Have no idea where you live--
However, for instructions-- I noticed that Walmart fabric section had a $6 book on upholstry-- look at it and see if that's what you need. Specifically look at that book to get a list of tools you'll need. I would start with something small-- a footstool maybe--
If you are learning to sew-- make some pillows of what ever fabric/colors you have found that you like-stuff it with the stuff Walmart has. -Then you can take the pillow when you look for other fabric....(I usually make a pillow to make sure it will go with what I have.....) I made pillows for a friend in the colors she liked, she was trying to decide-on expensive drapery- -- and since the pillows are small-- I could make them for less than $10-

Fabric-- I would start with google for your home town/state-- (if it's moderate to big in size). Check your local yellow pages-- look for fabric outlets--Ask the ladies at Walmart-- they are all sewers-- Check with Hancock Fabrics-- Joann's--a local store-- Ask all of them about fabrics--
If you have something like Hobby Lobby or Garden Ridge-- don't stick on just lengths of fabrics-- coverlets/throws-Bed spreads---- that's just a huge piece of fabric- The real point is-- don't sink a lot of cash in your fabric-- so you won't have a cat fit if it doesn't work out!! Give yourself a break!! Lots to learn-- none of which is actually hard.... I would suggest you find a friend that wants to learn, too-- two heads.... really does work you know. and parts of re-upholstry it's nice to have 4 hands.....

Have you heard of Home Demonstration organizations?? they are groups of people who are led by a person that is connected to the state A&M colleges-- they give classes on sewing- canning, re-upholstery, re-finishing furniture-- I'm sure there is more-- Most of the colleges that were A&M are now "State" universities-- Oklahoma A&M changed to Oklahoma State University.
I did a little sewing today and recalled warm feelings-- my Home Ec teacher has positively influenced my entire adult life.....
I wish you luck in your experiment--
