I made them from scratch once...soaked the beans overnight, cooked them low and slow with salt pork and seasonings. Guess what? Duke the dog can keep the secret recipe. I'm buying cans from now on and doctoring them up (I hesitate to call that semi-homemade...Sandra Lee couldn't cook to save you platinum blonde head!).

I make these and they are gone every time.

Calico Beans
½ - 1 pound bacon, sautéed
1 small onion, diced
1 - 16 oz can baked beans
2 small cans pork and beans
1 can white beans
1 can other bean (pinto, kidney…)
1/4 cup molasses
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tsp mustard

Drain the juice in the baked beans and reserve to use as needed throughout cooking.
Put all ingredients in slow cooker. Cook on high about 1 hour. Once hot and bubbly, turn slow cooker down to low and cook a minimum of 3 hours, adding the reserved liquid if they become too dry.

I have done it but typically dont have the time very often to boil the beans and then bake them.
I do use canned pork and beans then add ketchup mustard brown sugar and onion and bake them for a few hours. So they are semi home made I guess. They are so good. I dont like any of the canned baked beans they just dont have the same flavor. I never did understand how people liked them.

Stir together & pour into glass baking dish sprayed w/ Pam. Layer 4 strips bacon across the top & sprinkle the rest of the fried onion rings. Bake @ 300 for about an hour.....Great with BBQ

I always bake my kidney beans. Straight from the can into the oven for 20 minutes. Taste much nicer than boiled. And no, they aren't poisonous if you don't boil them after opening the can. That is only for raw kidney beans that haven't been soaked, which the canned ones have been.

I am so glad to see this recipe for Calico beans! That must be what we had at a recent gathering and they were so good! I cant' wait to make them myself. It would be silly and probably more expensive to make them from scratch, so I will stick with the cans specified in the recipe!

I boil many different kinds of beans but have never baked them, They are delicious and inexpensive but price IS going up lately.

Probably: but that's people with LOTS of time on their hands. They're made from haricot beans, and my mum and I used to do them when I was a little'un. But [as someone else said] you can't argue with 7p a tin no matter how much better they taste when you do it yourself.
