Because secretly they want to believe. By picking on believers, they hope the believers will tell them words of wisdom, which will make believers out of them.

Well, although I do not belive in the Christian version of God, I do have spiritual beliefs that have nothing to do with any organized religion. To some extent I sympathize with those who desire some spiritual meaning to life, and so I am usually gentle with religious types.
I think athiesm is not really intellecutally any more sound that fundamentalist religion - agnosticism is more sound. How do we know that there are not gods and even a supreme being?
There is plenty of evidence for a spiritual realm: the reports of those near death, death bed visions, apparitions, children who remember previous lives, and communications thru mediums. None of this has anything to do with what is taught in the churches, but for what it is worth, some of the communications thru mediums have talked of both God and how we may eventually develop to the point where we are what men once called gods.

If religious people can try to convert people to their beliefs, why not the other way around? Think about all the missionaries, Jehova's Witnesses, and events held by religious organizations that advertize their religion? When was the last time you saw an "Athiest bake sale"? Or the local "Pagan fish fry"?
Picking on someone is no worse than being condescending towards someone just because they hold different beliefs than you.

I understand how you feel. I actually come to this section to help people learn the truth about spiritual things, and hopefully guide them away from God and religion altogether so they can lead happier lives.
You should see some of the vulgar perverted sickening replies I receive from religious people, but then I understand that these people suffer from mental illness and lack of intelligence, and so, perhaps their behaviour, although irrational, has a rational explanation. I hope the following helps ease your pain and suffering.
Atheists are more intelligent than religious believers.
My own observation and analysis of the various posters on Yahoo Answers clearly reveals that Atheists are without any doubt, far more intelligent, thought provoking, and capable of holding sensible debate compared to their religious counterparts.
My private research studies indicate that religious people tend to be below average intelligence, and also have a tendency to be more violent than non-believers. This also seems to be supported by profiling various YA religious posters.
Science suggests that religion is a mental illness and that religious people act irrationally because they are genetically predisposed to the “religious or spiritual” gene. Statistics indicate that the higher your education, income, and intelligence, the more likely you are not to believe in a god.
In general terms, this summarises as Atheists are intelligent and religious people suffer from madness.

I don't pick on them.
However, I don't like it when their beliefs go as far as into educational system. I want to have children eventually and I want tem to be lrearning information, facts, science rather than questionable beliefs of other people.

2) It's fun
3) They started it by saying what they believe
4) They started it by picking on those whom do not
I personally fall under 1 and 4.

I resent your assertion that it is a waste of time. Peace and understanding cannot be attained in a world polarized by superstition, that is why we struggle to convince the masses that their addiction to the opium of religion is eventually going to kill them.
