I'm assuming you mean 2006, not 1996, right? All bankruptcies stay on your credit report for 10 years.. regardless of whether they are dismissed or discharged. By the way, only a judge can "dismiss" your bankruptcy .. this is not anything you can do yourself. I take it you are in a Chapter 13?

10 years from the date it was discharged. The bankruptcy will automatically fall off your credit report, 10 years from that date do nothing except look up you credit reports. If you try to dismiss the bankruptcy all the creditor may be able to come after you for what you owe.

If you were assigned a case number that was ultimately dismissed under Title 11 of the United States Code {Chapter 7, Chapter 11, or Chapter 13}, then in accordance with Section 605(a) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the dismissal will show on your credit report 10 years from the date of entry of the order of relief (the day you filed).

You need to get your free credit reports in February 2007, than see if the bankruptcy info is removed. If it is not removed. Request all them to delete any bankruptcy information because it now obsolete and the information must be removed under Federal law. The reason I say wait tell Feb. It seems that the free reports are two months behind.

you could have applied for a house 2 years after you filed for chapter 7 as long as you kept out of debt, managed your money wisely, and have a good job, etc. Fanny Mae and HUD will help you.

A word of caution, never do a bankruptcie by yourself without and attorney. There is so much to this that only an attorney can do. USE AN ATTORNEY!!!
