I know diamonds look pretty but, why do you have to spend so much to say I love you. I know that the diamond industry has poured 100's of millions into advertising to make people belive that its a part of getting married, buying a diamond ring. They put it in movies, soap operas, commmercials, its everywhere, and it no coincidence. So what do you think.

No, my husband has never bought me a diamond ring (engagement or otherwise). This irritates my sister more than you would ever believe. I wear a plain silver band when I want to wear it and my husband does not even wear his wedding band.

I just bought an engagement ring that my gf saw at a jewelry store and just fell it love with, so I went back later and got it. The ring itself was $1000 (for 5/8 cwt) and then I bought the matching wedding band for $600 (another 1/3 cwt diamond) for $1600 total. Total, it almost 1 cwt when put together and she loved the look of it like I mentioned, so that's all that matters to me.
However in a few years or so, I do plan on getting a better diamond put in it, but since she will be happy with it, I'm happy with it.
If a girl loves a ring it doesn't matter if it cost $1 or $25,000. When someone is getting married, the extra money saved can and probably will be used on something else like the wedding.

We're using my grandma's wedding band that she gave to us when she passed. It's gorgeous, and it is personal.
Honestly I think the diamond is a great thing, especially on a wedding band. It's more than a pretty jewel, it's something that isn't going to tarnish. It really DOES last forever. It's the strongest mineral in the known world--wouldn't you want THAT to represent your marriage?
My engagement ring was $100, worth about $500.
My wedding band, other than my grandmother's, cost $200.
You don't have to pay a fortune for diamonds.
There's no one to say you have to buy a new diamond ring. I have a used diamond ring, and it's gorgeous. It doesn't matter to me whether it new or used, but the fact that it's a diamond makes it priceless to me.

I think that diamonds are the traditional engagement ring, and most brides would feel cheated without it, even if they don't say so.
But you don't have to go to one of those expensive jewelry stores. There are very nice diamond rings at J.C.Penney's, for instance... if you are on a very tight budget.
Your bride should know what your financial situation is, and if she can tell that it isn't an expensive ring, then hopefully she will understand. If not, then maybe she isn't the girl for you.
But yes, I think you should opt for the diamond ring, unless she says she doesn't want it.

I have my heart set on a Sapphire engagement ring with a perfect center stone.
I'm a non-traditional girl and I love sapphires...they're my birthstone.
My boyfriend however, he likes diamonds and wants to drop a decent wad of cash on it.
I'm sure I'll get used to having a ring that's more expensive than my car on my hand...but it seems a bit excessive right now.
I say go with what you love. I know when I find "the ring" it won't matter if it's $100 or 10,000 dollars.

Well......sort of. My ring wasn't very expensive (less than $1000) which was fine by me. I can't see spending several grand on a ring I'm going to wear every day of my life. It's going to get dirty, scratched, beat up on..........
However, I DO NOT like colored stones. I wear diamonds and pearls-that's it. I'm not a big jewelry person, I think there is something elegant and tasteful about subtlety.
I have my single stone diamond ring. Very simple, average size diamond. However, if I liked colored jewelry, that would have been fine with me (no pearls, they are too delicate for everyday wear).

My heart has fallen victim to such advertising, I guess the romantic side of me cant wait to get that diamond ring. Then my brain or the logical side of me says, why the hell do I need to wear that much money on one finger. I can go both ways with this question.

no,my fiance just proposed to me with a c.z.,i said YES! so glad we are not in debt from some stupid stone. i agree the diamond industry is just as bad as the fashion industry, which i rebel against also.we like to joke about diamonds being forever & my ring being only good for 3years.lol

I think that you are right. However, it depends upon what your fiance feels is important to her. There are many options: having no rings, engraved rings, antique rings, etc. Discuss the personal statement you want to make with your fiance.
