She has nursed them all for an hour for two periods of time. She now refuses to lay down with the puppies and when they get latched on, she will stand up and walk away. I just attempted feeding all four of them pet formula and they did ok. how ofted and how much can I expect them to drink at a time. They were born this morning between 1am and 330 am they weigh 7.5 and the one I'm worried about, the runt soto speak is 5 oz

also, how long does it usually take for mom's milk to come in. I think that may help her if she gets relief.

How old are they? Is this her first litter? Give her some privacy and let her do her thing. She may think that they don't need to eat again yet - plus it will take a few days for her milk production to build up - if she knows that she is low on milk then she will not feed them for a few hours. If I were you, I'd just watch her and the puppies for about three hours - if after that she isn't feeding them then step in and bottle feed - especially the runt because you don't want to risk fading puppy. Good Luck - If you need anything just let me know.

We had a Bassett hound that was too worried about getting attention for herself. We had to lock her in a small room with the pups when we weren't around. She would lay down eventually and just have to let them nurse because there was no where to go. When we were around we would have to hold her down and pet her so the pups could nurse. After awhile she would let them nurse. We lost four out of 10 or so because she let them scoot all over and they ended up in the weather and got infested with flies. She was the worst mom in the world. My father took her to get fixed after that. They were the cutest pups too.

have you tryed sitting with her with a collar and leashand try to let her know she a good girl, and its ok.if that dont work, the pet fomula is ok,but they have to be feed at least every 3 hours and maybe the runt more.but try to work with momma first,,,her milk is very important.momma seem like she need some help.as long as shes not nipping at them, keep working with her...she will hopefully realizes she a momma soon...**** luck

This happened to us one time. We moved the mom into a COOL, quiet place and she relaxed and let her milk come down. She was nervous and hot and wouldn't let them nurse. Also, sometimes mastitis is setting in, when their nipples are getting sore. Try the first suggestion and if that doesn't work, check with your vet.

If its her first litter that might be the reason, because she might not know what to do,lay her down and latch them on toher and don't let her get up and she will start to understand thats what she needs to do,it might also be that there is still one more puppy on the way

the old saying mom knows best, as long as she is nursing them they should be okay. her body has to make more milk before she can feed them. if she is not nursing at all-then feed them the formula--make sure mom gets lots of food and water
