I feel a bit of pity for both, yes.

Pity for atheists (in my country, at least) because they are living under a supposedly secular government that has bent over backwards to accomodate the supernatural mandates, moral codes and behavioral standards of one particular faith. They aren't living in a nation with religious freedom, they're living in a nation in which you are free to be Christian or else free to be a second class citizen.

I pity Christians because, well, they live their life loving and fearing a myth. Closing your mind to reason is killing your mind.

Only the ones--on both sides--who take their views to blinding extremes. That is, those who are so "anti" the other view, that they feel nothing but animosity for them...and the need to endlessly express their own shallowness and lack of sophistication on the net and in here. I mean, c'mon...do us all a favor and grow up, huh.

I'm not a religious person myself, but I do see the value in religion as practiced by most people--not the screaming, glazed-eyed, televangelist types. There is several thousand years worth of moral forensics and ethical arguments that we can all take advantage of, and benefit from. I don't NEED to predicate my morals in a belief in some "creator" and neither do you--but the teachings were worked out by humans, not some "god", and are therefore worthy of serious study for there own right.

Conversely, the most intelligent "religious" people I know are those who happily proclaim their faith AND are equally happy with scientific views of the world. They keep religion in it's place, and keep science in it's place. None of these people are "science-bashers" either: they don't hate Darwin, or even have a problem with evolution, the Big Bang, a 4.6 billion year old Earth, etc.

I guess the point is: there are loonies in every crowd, and you'll much happier if you can avoid falling into the traps they set to get you "on their side". Think for yourself, avoid fanatics, and be prepared to think more and harder than they do.

I have just encountered one of the most rational human biengs on the planet. Prof. Richard Dawkins. He pities the world, he is frightened for the world because because of the hatred caused by What Karl Marx referred to as the opium of the people. Organised religion.

Why would you feel pity for people of faith? Each to their own! Nothing wrong with believing the existence or non-existence of god.

I don't feel pity for anyone. What they believe is their decision and I am in no position to judge that.

Religion has been the reason for most wars, tragedies and sufferings of humanity just because every one wishes the other human being to follow his God.

Yup. I've come to the conclusion that a fanatic is a fanatic, it makes no difference what side of the line your on. The pagans and the agnostics are actually nicer to talk to.
