I don't think that its entirely true anymore. I still wouldn't reccomend it because the food takes on a metalic taste. But years ago you couldn't do it because food was actually canned in aluminum cans. Cans are no longer made of aluminum therefore it no longer poses a danger.

I think it's because once you open the can and the metal inside is exposed to oxygen, it can cause the food to go bad, or the metal to react to the food or something like that.
