you need to return it to the store and get your money back, then find another store to shop in. sounds like they are repackaging expired ground beef and puttinga new date on it. and call your local consumer affairs department to complain.

#! get a refund
#2 switch grocer! Find a reputable butcher
#3 check the setting on the fridge thermostat. Is it low enough?

Ground beef should be frozen as quickly as possible (don't drive to other stores with food in your trunk for example)..thaw them the evening prior in the fridge.
Or, you can cook it right away...keep chilled in a lidded container and use as needed for your sauces, soups or baked dishes. Use within a few days.

All meats should have no odors when fresh, they also feel clean...if they feel slick or slimy, they are already spoiled!

Hi Kraizee, I would totally disagree with the other chefs who said eat it - the heat will kill the bacteria - it may not. You cannot keep putting meat in and out of the freezer defrosting and freezing it more than once is dangerous and could lead to food poisoning. Also you cannot always rely on smell, what does bacteria smell like? the food could be riddled with bacteria viruses and all sorts of unwelcome guests and still smell fresh and like raw meat. The discolouration is just where the air has hit it and has no real correlation to bacteria. I would throw this meat out and not even give it to a dog. You might survive eating it this time and live to brag about it.I fi you are femail and expexting a baby or are likeyly to be I especially would not take the risk. But I would not rate your chances if you keep on taking such risks. all the best Rab

When you buy it, ground beef should look red and fresh and have no smell. If you open it, use some and just put the package (unsealed) back in the fridge, it will turn brown and (as bacteria multiply) start to smell bad.
If the meat does not look red and fresh at the meat counter (regardless of the package date) .. don't buy it.

When you buy ground beef, it can be ground anything beef as long as it is beef. You could be eating tongue. Look for 100% ground whatever part you want. Sirloin Chuck ect.

Fresh meat is not supposed to smell sour or 'funny'. Get your money back and get another grocery store. And tell the health department what's going on with the meat.

Good luck!
