I'm not so much an atheist, but I'm not a god believer either.

Your question is problematic because if believing in a God is a mental disease then not believing in a God would also be a mental disease.

Both of these are extremes as there is no proof for either.
The same faith that people have to believe that there is a god, is the same faith that people use to believe that there is not a god.
I could easily give examples why either could be true.

If one lacks faith completely and utterly, then one could not believe either one of these to be true. So maybe, I am the one with the mental illness as people with faith are the norm.

Yes belief in religion is genetic. Every aspect of your development is based on your genes and two children raised in the same environment don't allways choose the same religious beliefs so tendency towards religious belief is not governed entirely by environment. Psychologists will probably some day declare that faith in a god is a Mental Illness becuase they get paid to have people think that the way they were born is an illness that needs to be cured. To their credit, biblebangers that I've known who get on meds tend to tone the hellfire and brimstone down a bit. The assumptions that Athiests are advanced is a bit egotistical. It's not impossible to think that they're part of a control mutation that maintains social ballance or checks population growth by encouraging promiscuity or discouraging monogamy. Either way there's little to support that Humanity is evolving towards or away from Atheism.

There's no gene but in Europe a headline 2 or 3 weeks ago was "Scientists found where god lives" The answer was: "In the human brain" and it seems that there is an area in the human brain responsible for religious experiences. Unluckily in some people there seem to be strong connections to whatever other area that makes agressive feelings.

no, god is not a mental disease, or a gene. its simply something some people choose to believe in and some of us do not. just because i dont believe a god exists doesnt mean whoever does is closer to a neanderthal than i am, it just means they have faith in something that i dont.

No faith is a mental illness. As a child everyone brain believes what it is told in order to protect the child. When the child grows up this stops unless of course you believe in god in which case this blind belief gets called faith and the brain gets stuck in a childlike state.
