The best solution would be to give each son his whole number of sheep, 8 + 5 + 1 = 14 sheep and sell the other three. The money would then be divided proportionally including the missing 1/18th as to 1/2 to one son, 1/3rd top the next one, 1/9th to the third and the remaining 1/18th to whoever he has left it to. If no-one then the 1/18th would be divided equally between the three sons.
