I am female. but still have the same problem
Step No !. get someone to give you a razor cut.where they razor underneath the bush.taking out some of the Volume. They are not layering. that would make it worst.
when you wash your hair. use a decent conditioner.
Very important, Take a towel. and dry your hair thoroughly , don't comb .yet. Put some stay in conditioner. and then take your fingers gently through one area of the head at a time. Never put a hair dryer on it. you will blow away. separate the knots with fingers. always put more conditioner on your ends. so they do not tangle. ,,,I you must dry your hair. used a diffuser. which lets another pattern of hair flow that does give you a bouffant.
I am 50. been working on it for years. enjoy the waves and curls. don't brush ,don't comb. use your hands and fingers. or a large wire comb gently. send me a picture, you won't beelive the different.

I am female but maybe I can help! I also have very thick curly long hair. Although mine is not greasy it does get tangled and break alot. I find the best way to keep it healthy is to wash and condition it, but brush your hair through whilst the conditioner is still on it. People say this will break the hair but it's a better option than trying to brush it dry and ending up with a ball of friz! The conditioner helps the brush/comb glide anyway. Once you have rinsed it, brush it through again and apply some mousse. This keeps the hair in seperate curls and helps stop tangles. I wouldn't bother with gel as it is too hard and doesn't let the hair move like mousse. A leave in conditioner also works wonders one a week or fortnight. The main thing is never comb your hair when it's dry! Sorry if this is all a bit girly for you, but it works for me!
