Hi Abby...house cats can swim however most prefer not too and could easily drown after getting tired soon.
The only known house cat who likes to swim is the Turkish Van breed (http://swimmingcats.com/). Exotic/wild cats on the other hand swim to use the water as their toilet and catch some food.

I used to live on a boat and there was a mangy looking dock cat that hung out at the marina. Once we all got drunk and someone threw the cat in the water (sorry we were so mean) and the cat swam back. That swim drowned so many fleas that his fur started growing back in. After that he went swimming on his own every couple of days.

Yes, absolutely they can swim ! My cat has fallen into our swimming pool a couple of times and I did not see it until the soaking wet cat came back into the house . I try to watch them but I guess I goofed . We have both learned our lesson .
The hardest part I figure is for them to find a foot hold to get up out off the slippery pool .
By the way my neighbor's DOG drowned in her pool . She could not get out and tired of swimming .

Yes- I had a cat when I was a child who would deliberately jump in the bathtub with me! He would "kitty-paddle" all around the tub... I would just get him out & dry him off at the same time I was drying myself....
Come to think of it, he was very unique in other ways too-- he liked to be dried with the hair dryer, would let me vacuum his excess fur off, liked to ride in the car....
