Honey go to the Skyline to enjoy the view ...somewhere like the various restaurants at Navy Pier or along the waterfront...even better go to the Signature room on top the 95th floor at the Hancock Bldg....you could do a million things in Chicago afterall!!!

Japonais is a really beautiful and trendy restaurant, and it seems like the celebrities are always going there in town. I went for my birthday a few years ago, and I still look back on it fondly. Good food too!
I also like Mon Ami Gabi- it's in Lincoln Park on Lincoln Park West, and it's another beautiful restaurant with an amazing menu. The crowd is a little older, but it's definitely a sophisticated atmosphere.
Another recommendation would be Emilio's in Lincoln Park. It would be great if you were going with a group- most of the food is served tapas style.
My last reco (I swear!) Coobah in Lakeview on Southport. Really young and fun Latin restaurant with a lounge-y vibe and innovative food.

a good place to check for stuff like that would be websites such as metromix.com or you could try www.wttw.com click on programs and then click on check please with their website you can search by cuisine and alphabetically they have reviews from customers so maybe if you check out what others had to say about the restaurant they went to that might give you some idea on how to dress they also mention costs as well so that night give you another Idea on how to dress. Metromix does the same sort of things as well..Speaking of places to dine you could the grand lux or zapitsa they are good I have been to both
Hope this Helps

Charlie Trotter's has great food. The Brazilan restaurants are pretty hot right now. Maybe Fogo de Chao. But maybe you would like the view of the 95th floor from the Handcock Building.
